Michael Joseph McKenna was ordained and installed as Eighth Bishop of Bathurst on 26th June 2009 by His Eminence Cardinal George Pell; Emeritus Bishop, the Most Rev Bishop Emeritus Patrick Dougherty (Bathurst); and Emeritus Bishop, the Most Rev Jeremiah Coffey (Sale). He is the first Bishop of Bathurst in 89 years ordained within the Diocese.

Bishop Michael was originally a priest of the Sale Diocese and has held various positions since his ordination in 1983, including two terms as Secretary General of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference. At the time of his appointment to Bathurst, he was Chaplain to the University of Melbourne and Administrator of All Saints’ Parish in Fitzroy.

Bishop Michael is a Member of the Australian Catholic Bishops' Commission for Administration and Information and the Australian Catholic Bishops' Commission for Ecumenism and Inter-religious Relations.


During 2010, Bishop McKenna held a series of seven regional meetings across the Diocese to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our Diocese.
