Ordination of Deacons in the Diocese of Bathurst
Bishop of Bathurst, the Most Reverend Michael McKenna ordained Mr Michael Williams and Mr Joshua Clayton as Deacons on Friday 17th February at the Cathedral of St Michael and St John.
Mike and Josh are both married men with families who have been active membes of the Church for many years. The journey towards Ordination to the Diaconate has taken Mike and Josh close to seven years of formation and preparation. Josh is from Bathurst and Mike is from Wellington and, together with Reverend Deacon Terry Mahony and Reverend Deacon Charles Applin, who were ordained early last year, we now has four deacons serving God's people of the Diocese of Bathurst.
The evening saw more than 250 guests witness the ordination of Josh and Mike, with guests travelling from far and wide, including several from overseas, to witness this special occasion.
Their ordination as deacons is for life and will put Josh and Mike in a new and permanent relationship of service to the Bishop and Christ's faithful. Their wives, Anna and Peta, have acccompanied them on this journey of discernment and formation and have given their consent for Josh and Mike to make this life-changing commitment, which they will carry out in concert with their commitment to the Sacrament of Matrimony.
Deacons directly help the Bishop in reaching out to the poeople of the edges of Church life. These distance may be geographical or social and economic; or distances of the heart in faith and practice. They assist with works of charity, catechesis and co-ordination.
