Statement from Bishop Michael McKenna on the future of St Joseph’s House, Perthville
St Joseph’s Boarding College, Perthville, has been an important part of our Diocesan story.
Many of the women who have helped build up the Catholic Church in our region received their education there. Some went on to become religious, some to be married and others as single women. It was a magnificent ministry of the Sisters of St Joseph, who have continued to support students there. We owe the Sisters our deep gratitude.
Since 1967, when the boarding and classroom locations were separated; and, more recently, after the Sisters of St Joseph were no longer able to run the boarding house, the facility has undergone many changes.
For some years now, demand for places at St Joseph’s House has continued to decline to the point that it is no longer viable. Accordingly, after review and consultation, I must announce with deep regret that St Joseph’s House will not accept any more enrolments.
MacKillop College and Catholic Education Office staff will make personal contact over the coming weeks with the families of the boarders currently residing at St Joseph’s House to assist them in their decision-making about accommodation arrangements while they continue their education at MacKillop College.
I can assure families of the ongoing quality of care for their daughters during this transition period.
