Sisters Choose Unity

The Sisters of St Joseph Perthville thank you for your prayers and good wishes for their Extraordinary Chapter on 15th July, which began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael McKenna in St Joseph’s Chapel, Perthville.

After many months spent in prayer and discernment, the Sisters of St Joseph of Perthville decided at the Chapter to seek to merge/fuse with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

Their desire is for greater unity with all Josephite Sisters founded by Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods. This decision of the Perthville Josephite Sisters has the support of Bishop Michael McKenna.

The Sisters will now make a formal request to Sr Anne Derwin, Congregational Leader of the Central Josephite Sisters, seeking the support of her Congregation for their merger/ fusion.

If this is granted, the Perthville Sisters will apply to the Vatican’s Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL) for permission to formally unite with the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

This process will take some months. Should this permission be granted, the Perthville sisters will continue to maintain their ministry among, and their loyalty and allegiance to, the people of the Bathurst Diocese whose friendship and relationships are so important to them.

Please continue to remember the sisters in prayer as they take the next steps in the process.

Sr Therese McGarry
Congregational Leader
