Fundraising Dinner for Caritas Australia – Project Compassion
Jessica Meyers, a 15 year old student currently in Y10 at St Raphael’s Catholic School in Cowra, recently organised a Gala Dinner with the theme To Help Make The World A Better Place. According to reports it was a great success and raised $16,435.20 for Caritas Australia.
Her first attempt to fundraise for Caritas Australia was inspired by a religion task given to the students to "try and make the world a better place". Jessica walked 20 kilometers to the parish church of St Raphael's in Cowra. With the help of sponsors, parishioners and the Cowra community she raised $2,310.00. This success inspired her to find out how the monies raised assisted the less fortunate.
Jessica said, "The sense of knowing many were helped got me thinking to hold another fundraiser. We held a cake stall after weekend masses when I was in Y9 and raised $1,010.00 for Caritas. I am very passionate about this cause as the word ‘Caritas’ is a Latin word, meaning 'Love & Compassion' and I know the people who get the help from Caritas need as much love and compassion as they can get."
And so the dream began, to organise a large fundraiser. Jessica was assisted by a group of dedicated people in the organising team.
The Gala Dinner was held on 23rd February 2013 at the Cowra Civic Centre. The Guest Speaker was Ms Belinda Green. Mayor Bill West and Father Laurie also spoke. There were great prizes to be won and an auction was held.
Jessica said, "After 11 months of planning and with the help of a dedicated team – a dream of mine came true. I am so thankful to everyone who contributed to the night, for those who attended, for those who made the night possible or donated to this fundraiser for Caritas Australia. I would like to express my thanks to the organising team who supported me from the very beginning: Fr Laurie Beath, Mrs Peta Bischof, Mr Ray Walsh, Ms Belinda Green, Mrs Carla Sparkes and my mother Mrs Annie Meyers – Thank you for all believing in me and helping me".
Many expressed their support through donations, letters, phone calls, email and cards which all contributed to a successful evening.
