Ash Wednesday in Gilgandra
The Gilgandra Parish celebrated the first day of Lent with the Ash Wednesday Mass in St Joseph's Church.
Lent is a time to think about our lives; a time to make changes for the better, to grow closer to God and think about how we can live our lives so they are similar to how Jesus lived his life.
Students from St Joseph's Catholic School in Gilgandra joined other parishioners for the Mass. The students were well prepared by their teachers and were quiet and reverent. They took part in the Mass doing readings and the Prayer of the Faithful and participated in the music.
Some of the students are not Catholics but they participated in all the activities. They all received the ashes and at Communion time received a blessing from Parish Priest, Father Martin O'Mahony.
Father Martin invited me to speak briefly to the children on the Lenten theme, so I told them about the three R's: Return - Come back to God; Repent - God welcomes those who repent; Refresh - When we come back to God and repent, He refreshes us.
Everyone left this beautiful Mass feeling happy and refreshed.
